Matthew 24

In this chapter we turn our attention to our Lord’s Olivet discourse.

One device used to remove “this generation” from the last days of the Old Covenant, is to divide Matthew 24 into two sections. This is done because of the obvious references in it, and in the parallel accounts of Mark and Luke, to the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70. Although the dividing point is debated, the premise is that the events and the people referred to in the first section apply to that generation and the destruction of Jerusalem, while the events and people of the second section apply to a yet future generation at the Second Coming. Thus its proponents are able to “have their cake, and eat it too”, by allowing the obvious prophecy of Jerusalem’s destruction to stand, while still maintaining their framework for a future return of Christ to a physical kingdom. This chapter will demonstrate the damage done to Scripture by placing the second coming of Christ into a future generation.
